When dining at a restaurant, it's easy to find a variety of vegan dishes on the menu. You can be offered many meal choices.

However, a fan of vegan sausages vows to skip them after learning that vegetarian sausages are produced

The document was posted on Channel 4, where Helen Lawal visited Tesco to explore the vegan burger at Tesco, while Kate Quilton delved into how to milk an oat.

John Whaite visited a sausage factory to witness the production of vegan bangers, and Briony May Williams learned to create an eggless quiche.

The investigation into plant-based sausages took center stage on the show, highlighting the prevalence of vegan options coated in a casing similar to the meat variety.

At Heck Foods in Yorkshire, John Whaite met with Callum Smith, the innovation manager overseeing the production of over 600 sausages a day.

Smith explained that the reason their sausages taste like pork sausages is that they use textured vegetable protein and alginate gel derived from seaweed, giving the meat-free sausages a satisfying snap.

He said: 'We bump the meat-free sausage mix and a gel into this little head at the same time.

'This is alginate gel and it's made from a seaweed.'

The process involved injecting the meat-free sausage mix and gel into a calcium chloride solution, resulting in skin that stiffens upon contact.

In another show,  Helen Lawal visited Tesco's development kitchen. There, she met Faye Hasnip, a product development manager. Hasnip discussed the rise of plant-based product trends, emphasizing customer demand for vegetable-centric options.

The conversation delved into various plant-based burgers, with Hasnip saying the explosion of brands in the meat mimic space.

Ms Hasnip said: 'In the past 5 or 6 years, we've seen brands explode in the meat mimic space.'

She said: 'Going forward, customers are looking for something that is vegetable-packed.'

Additionally, the show featured insights from Jamie Robinson, the head development chef at Tesco, who demonstrated the process of creating meatless burgers using a variety of vegetables. Robinson said, "We start with a base. Mix it up until we've got a dough."

They also enhanced flavor by smoking, charring, and roasting vegetables to enrich the overall culinary experience.

He added: 'You get all that goodness and all that flavor.'

One person said: Why does a vegan want to eat a sausage that's made out of vegetables but tastes like pork? Why don't they want something made out of vegetables to taste like a carrot or a beetroot? It's just so bizarre.

A second wrote: Why is so much effort and cost put into vegan food so it visually looks almost identical to the meat product? If I were a vegan, I would want it to look as different as possible

A third commented: Why do they make sausages that taste like pork but are just plant-based concoctions? Why not have your plant-based sausage instead? Why does it have to taste like meat???

Someone else said: It makes me laugh when vegans shun animal products yet poison themselves with chemicals, trying to recreate the same taste as the ones they're trying to get away from!
