Why do Japanese people wear socks when they sleep

Thursday, 18/04/2024, 15:50 (GMT+7)

People wear socks to keep warm when the weather is cold, but there is a strange thing: Japanese people have the habit of wearing socks almost all year round.

Wearing socks while sleeping helps improve blood circulation, keeps the feet warm, facilitates quicker onset of sleep, and extends total sleep duration, thereby enhancing longevity.

In Japan, people wear socks almost year-round, sometimes even keeping them on while sleeping.

This is also the country with the highest average life expectancy in the world.

For 20 consecutive years, Japan's life expectancy has reached 84.6. Scientists believe that the habit of wearing socks may be related to health and longevity issues.

Socks help maintain a stable body temperature.

In fact, many analyses have pointed out the benefits of wearing socks and keeping the feet warm in general.

A study published in the International Journal of Anthropology and Physiology revealed that wearing socks improves sleep quality and makes people fall asleep 15 minutes earlier than usual.

This habit may increase the average total sleep time by about 32 minutes.

When wearing socks to sleep, the temperature of the feet is protected, blood circulation becomes more efficient, maintaining a relatively stable body temperature, thus helping people fall asleep more easily.

Meanwhile, research from the University of Surrey and Northwestern University suggests that poor sleep quality can reduce lifespan by 10%.

In fact, in those who frequently experience insomnia and poor sleep, natural immune function decreases, and the risk of diabetes and nervous system diseases increases.

Sleeping with socks on also improves symptoms of menopausal hot flashes.

This is the sudden body heat, night sweats, chest pounding, and flushing. This is related to hormonal imbalance during menopause, affecting temperature regulation.

Wearing socks to sleep can lower the body's core temperature at night, improving hot flashes.

Some people often have cold hands and feet, mainly due to excessive constriction of blood vessels, causing reduced blood flow to the hands and feet, resulting in cold and numb fingers.

Wearing socks to sleep can help alleviate this condition and keep the feet warm.

In fact, during the day, with the presence of sunlight, there is sufficient yang energy, and the body's activities help accelerate metabolic processes, resulting in higher body temperature.

When the sun sets at night, the external temperature begins to decrease, and the body temperature decreases accordingly (about 1-2 degrees Celsius).

At this time, the metabolic processes slow down, the feet are farthest from the heart, circulation efficiency decreases, causing the feet to become cold, and unable to keep up with the body.

Low body temperature and low foot temperature can easily affect sleep.

In addition to wearing socks to sleep, other habits also help Japan belong to the group of countries with the highest life expectancy in the world.

Japanese people eat bland food and use less salt, oil, and spices.

Compared to Chinese people who prefer fried, stir-fried, and braised dishes, Japanese people prefer a "primitive" diet, applying simple cooking methods, and trying not to lose the nutritional value of food.

Japanese people also enjoy intellectual games.

Even at an older age, they often go to game rooms, and even play electronic sports. This form of "brain exercise" helps fight aging, and improve cognitive performance.
