Why Galaxy is called Dove in America

People are still using the name 'Dove' in the United States while retaining the name 'Galaxy' in the UK.

In 1986, Mars Inc. acquired Dove, a brand initially founded by Greek-American Leo Stefanos, the proprietor of Dove Candies & Ice Cream. Leo Stefanos had introduced his candy and ice cream offerings in select American cities.

Although Galaxy chocolate bars have been on UK supermarket shelves for approximately six decades, many have only recently become aware of why this delectable treat carries different names in various regions worldwide. Mars Inc., the manufacturer of this chocolate bar, first produced it in the UK in 1960.

However, it wasn't until about 30 years later, that the company introduced this iconic bar to American consumers as part of a test marketing initiative.

Despite being an American brand, the decision was made to retain its original identity as "Dove" rather than adopting the UK label "Galaxy" to prevent any confusion among its loyal customers.

The "Dove" brand name itself has a history dating back to 1939 when Leo Stefanos owned candy and ice cream shops under the banner "Dove Candies & Ice Cream." In 1956, he established the "Dove" brand for his ice cream bars, which were initially sold locally in Chicago. In 1985, he expanded to selected cities in the United States. Just a year later, Mars, Incorporated acquired the company.

However, the curious naming difference still leaves some scratching their heads, with Reddit users pondering the reason behind Galaxy Chocolate going by the name "Dove" in the United States while retaining the name "Galaxy" in the UK.

However, on Reddit, one user asked, 'Is there a reason why Galaxy chocolate is called Dove in the US?' They are still using the name 'Dove' in the United States while retaining the name 'Galaxy' in the UK.

One person said: Dove is actually the original name. They released it as Galaxy when they expanded to the UK. It's the same company, different branding.

Often the explanation behind it is as simple as "There was already something named Dove that would be too confusing" or even "We did some market research and Brits thought Galaxy was better".

A second wrote: Because it's made differently in the UK - plus the line of sanitary/hygiene products is already under the name Dove; the UK is small - you hear Dove; you think soap or deodorant

just like Cadbury Dairy Milk is made with different ingredients in the US(that's why it tastes revolting to UK people)

A third commented: Yes same brand but different names.. I believe the UK ingredients are different from the US ingredients also.. that could be why.
