A recent photo of a mother's Elf on the Shelf setup has caused controversy and sparked divided opinions among viewers
Cece, a mother of two, found herself at the center of controversy after her latest Elf on the Shelf prank went viral, leaving some people disgusted and others impressed by her creativity and commitment to the tradition.
Cece went all out to entertain her children during the holidays with inventive setups for the mischievous elf. However, her sixth-day creation took a dark turn, shocking many.
With the help of her husband, Cece released live goldfish into a bathtub filled with water
The video quickly gained nearly seven million views, showing Cece holding a plastic bag filled with tiny goldfish and releasing them into the bathtub.
She then positioned the Elf on the Shelf doll in the corner of the bath, holding a fishing rod.
The fishes swam frantically, and Cece proudly zoomed in on their movements.
However, she later confirmed that the fish did not survive long after the prank, as they were intended to become food for her sister's turtles.
While some viewers praised Cece's creativity, most expressed disgust and labeled the prank as cruel and thoughtless.
Many questioned the well-being of the fish and suggested that fake fish could have been used instead.
This is really worrying. How careless and selfish. You just kill a bunch of fish for the elf on the shelf. DISGUSTING!!! One angry user said.
This is not okay. This is animal abuse. Report!!! The second comment.
Instead of live goldfish, why not use fake fish? This is disgusting and cruel, someone wrote.
Wait what happened to the fish after that???? another person asked.
The video drew the attention of Elisa Allen, Vice President of Programmes at PETA, who criticized Cece for treating living animals as mere objects for social media views.
Allen urged parents to consider the well-being of animals and promote empathy during the holiday season.
“Fish, unlike The Elf on the Shelf, are living, feeling beings with personalities and a desire to be free, and it’s sickening to see them doomed—reduced to objects of a gimmick for social media views,” she said.
