During a tug-of-war competition, two men suffered a tragical loss as their arms were suddenly ripped from their bodies.
The event which was intended to be a source of celebration, quickly turned into a nightmare with everyone.
Two men lost their arms after participating in a brutal tug-of-war competition
The event took place during a celebration of Retrocession Day at a park along the Keelung River in Taipei in 1997.
This event attracted a staggering 1,600 participants joining in the tug-of-war, causing an enormous amount of pressure to be exerted on the five-centimeter nylon rope.
Remarkably, this nylon rope just only withstand 26,000 kg.
The huge number of participants created a huge force equivalent to 80,000 kg of force, far exceeding the rope's capacity.
Therefore, within seconds, the rope snapped, causing the arms of two men, Yang Chiung-ming and Chen Ming-kuo, to be violently torn from their bodies.
The two men were taken to the hospital in time to have their arms reattached
Both men were completely unaware of the impending danger as they pulled on the rope.
No one knows how their limbs became completely detached without the men even realizing the extent of their injuries at the moment it occurred.
Yang Chiung-ming and Chen Ming-kuo were immediately rushed to Mackay Memorial Hospital, where they underwent extensive microsurgery to reattach their severed arms.
While their physical injuries were treated, the psychological impact of the incident may obsess them forever.
This is not the only tragic accident that was caused by tug-of-war
In 2013, two students from California also lost their fingers while participating in a tug-of-war game during a break.
According to reports, the two wrapped the rope around their hands during the tug of war.
However, somehow the rope broke, creating additional tension that caused their fingers to be severed.
The incident seemed humorous when the rope broke, but they quickly panicked when they discovered the severed fingers of two students.
The two victims were both shocked and just stared at their hands, forgetting the pain.
Both teenagers underwent surgery and eventually made a full recovery.
