Cruise passengers were abruptly awakened at 2 a.m. when water started pouring through the ceiling of their ship, causing a chaotic and alarming scene.
This incident occurred aboard the Carnival Cruise ship Radiance and was described by one passenger as "absolutely terrifying." Video footage captured the intense streams of water cascading through the ceiling into one of the ship's corridors.
The passengers reported that it took hours before the ship's staff arrived to assess the situation. Amber, one of the passengers, shared several videos on TikTok.
In one video, she displayed the flooded corridor where passengers could be seen trying to salvage their belongings from the deluge. In another video, Amber filmed her stateroom to reveal the extent of the damage caused by the flooding.
According to Amber, the incident took place at 2 am when water started gushing into their room from the ceiling. Carnival Radiance security personnel can be heard telling her not to record in the video. She mentioned that they were still waiting for the cruise line's corporate team to contact them regarding the situation.
Carnival Cruise Line explained that the flooding occurred due to "a burst water line" affecting an area of the ship that encompasses less than two percent of its staterooms. The ship's crew members promptly cleaned the affected area, and the pipe was repaired.
The Carnival Radiance underwent a $200 million refurbishment in 2020 and offers sailings off the coast of the southwestern USA, routes to Hawaii, and parts of Mexico. All its voyages depart from Long Beach, California.
The video of the incident caused a wave of panic among viewers, as the idea of waking up to water pouring into the ship was understandably frightening.
One person said: If you go up on deck and there's a quartet playing Nearer My God to Thee....... jump in the first lifeboat you see
A second wrote: Nah, I see that I'm going straight to the main deck, life jacket on just in case. I'm not getting stuck behind one of them gates
A third commented: Based on every fact I know if water is inside the ship it sinks. The way I’d grab a life jacket and run to the deck, screaming we’re all going to die.
Another added: Just a word of advice. If the whole ceiling is leaking then you need to get out from under it cause it's a matter of time till it all comes down.
It's important to note that modern cruise ships are equipped with highly regulated life-saving facilities to ensure passenger safety in the rare event of an emergency. These include lifeboats positioned along each side of the ship, with a minimum requirement of accommodating 37.5% of the ship's passenger capacity on each side.
